Math Tutoring, Grades 8 to 12

One-on-one math tutoring following the British Columbia curriculum — online anywhere in Canada, or in person in Kelowna.

Math is the subject families ask about most, and usually for the same reason: it compounds. A gap in fractions in Grade 8 turns into trouble with algebra in Grade 9, and trouble with algebra turns into a struggle with quadratics in Grade 11. Most students who believe they are “bad at math” are really carrying something specific and fixable from a year or two earlier.

I'm Justin. I teach every session myself, and I've spent more than twenty years teaching math and science in BC classrooms — long enough to have watched the provincial curriculum change more than once, and to know where each course tends to lose people.

Math courses I tutor, Grade 8 to Grade 12

Each course page covers what is taught that year, where students most often get stuck, and what a session looks like.

Math 8

Math 8 tutoring that repairs the fraction, decimal and integer gaps students carry into high school, before those gaps make algebra feel impossible.

Math 9

Clear, patient Math 9 tutoring that helps students build confidence in number operations, algebra, geometry, and measurement.

Math 10

Math 10 tutoring focused on helping students master linear relations, systems of equations, trigonometry, and the foundations needed for senior math.

Math 11

Math 11 tutoring for Pre-Calculus, Foundations, and Workplace pathways. We break complex topics into understandable steps so students gain real confidence.

Math 12

Math 12 and Pre-Calculus 12 tutoring for students aiming for post-secondary success. Clear, methodical preparation for exams and future courses.

Grade 11 and 12 cover the Foundations, Workplace and Pre-Calculus pathways. Science and physics are listed on the subjects page.

When math tutoring helps

Students arrive for different reasons, and the work looks different in each case.

Falling behind in class
The course has moved on and the gap is widening. We find where understanding actually broke down — often a year or two earlier — and repair that before working forward.
One concept that will not click
Everything else is fine, but quadratics or logarithms refuse to make sense. Sometimes it only takes hearing it explained a different way.
A test or provincial exam coming up
Targeted review of the units that matter most, working through problems under something closer to real conditions.
Wanting to do better than they are
A student who is passing but knows they are capable of more, and wants someone to push the pace.
Homework and practice that stalls
Sessions can start with whatever they are stuck on this week, then move on to the reasoning underneath it.

One student, one tutor

Every session is one-on-one: one student working directly with me, for the full 60 minutes, so the instruction can focus entirely on that student's needs. The same tutor every week keeps the notes and the context between sessions.

That means sessions start from where the student actually is rather than where a syllabus says they should be. If a Grade 11 student needs to revisit Grade 9 algebra to make quadratics work, we do that. If they are ready to move ahead of the class, we do that instead.

Online across Canada, in person in Kelowna

Online math tutoring is available to students anywhere in Canada — the same teacher, the same preparation and the same price wherever a student lives.

I'm based in Kelowna, so in-person math tutoring is available in the Kelowna area only, at the student's home or a public library. Students in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are taught online — I don't travel to the coast, so there are no in-home sessions there.

What an online math session is like

We work on a shared digital workspace, so we write on the same page and both see the working as it happens rather than holding a page up to a camera. Math is a subject you have to watch someone do, and it matters that I can see where a line of reasoning goes wrong.

All a student needs is a device and a reliable internet connection. The exact setup depends on what they already use — a Chromebook, a school laptop, or a home computer all work — and we settle that after agreeing to meet, not before booking.

One-to-one tutoring is $70 an hour, the same for every course. Students who share a session pay from $40 each. Every session is 60 minutes, and the price is the same online or in person. If you would rather talk first, the 15-minute consultation is free and needs no account.
